Understanding Back and Neck Pain

Pain that occurs suddenly in your back or neck, due to an injury, is considered to be acute pain. Acute pain comes on quickly and may leave sooner than chronic back or neck pain. This type of pain should not last more than 6 weeks. Pain that may come on quickly or slowly and lingers for weeks, 3 months or greater, is considered to be chronic pain. Chronic pain is less common than acute pain.

Physiotherapy is considered to be the most effective and easy way of getting rid of any pain, stiffness or pain in the neck and back areas. The practice encompasses joint mobilization, stretching, massaging, exercises and techniques that reduce episodes of pain and discomfort; strengthen your muscles; reduce tension or soreness in the muscles; and give you the freedom to move your body as it pleases you.

Your physiotherapist will assess the causes for your back and neck pain, mobilize your spinal joints, and will give you advice on how to best maintain your thoracic mobility, essential for a healthy low back and neck.
